The first major high-goal tournament of the 2015 Argentine season, is set to begin on September 15th in Buenos Aires.
The Jockey Club Cup, a 26-goal open tournament established in 1944 by the Jockey Club, was interrupted in 1953 as the result of the club’s social seat on Florida Street being set on fire by a Peronist mob, which was closely protected by the police.
The tournament was resumed under the name Copa Hipódromos Argentinos. Tortugas- Aurora, composed of Horacio Baibiene, José M. Torres Zavaleta, Carlos Torres Zavaleta and Francisco Dorignac, won in 1955. The following year, with Andino Grahn replacing Baibiene, Tortugas- Aurora won again, defeating in the final game an El Trébol “B” team of Eduardo Bullrich, Carlos de la Serna, Bob Skene and Manuel Livingston.
Tortugas—La Alicia, with Marcelo Dorignac, Gastón Dorignac, Luis A. Lalor and Roberto Cavanagh, won the tournament in 1957, prevailing over the Hurlingham “A” team. This was the last year that the tournament was played under the name Hipódromos Argentinos – the Copa Jockey Club became known as the Abierto del Jockey Club.
