CASABLANCA WINS OPENER
Miguel Astrada turned in an amazing second half performance to give Casablanca a 13 to 11 win over Villa del Lago in the season opener Pennell Cup. It appeared that Polito Pieres was going to be hard to stop after his Villa del Lago team ran up a 9 to 5 half time lead. Astrada and Nic Roldan put together a second half rally that turned things around quickly. Astrada will named MVP and his horse Paulina was the Best Playing Pony.
BARRY CUP NEXT
Next up will be the 20 goal Joe Barry Cup. Twenty-two games will be played during the three-week tournament that features 11 teams. New teams this year include Merchant Hub featuring the exciting Obregon Brothers; Mariano (7) and Facundo (8) and Enigma with England based French patron Jerome Wirth (1). This is Wirth’s first appearance in Florida. Enigma has been very successful competing in England and Argentina over the past nine years.
The defending champion is Valiente. Team Captain Bob Jornayvaz is still nursing an elbow injury and has decided not to play until next month. The finals of the Barry Cup are slated for Sunday January 25th.
PLAY IT AGAIN
Instant Replay has arrived at IPC Following a year of testing by game officials at Grand Champions Polo Club the USPA has approved the use of TV cameras for instant replay of questionable calls during a game.
Unlike the original concept, which has been in place for twelve years in Argentina, the third man reviews the video and quickly makes a decision. The American version will require a fourth person to make the call. Thus delaying the game even longer. The club will be required to have at least three cameras trained on the game and proper equipment to immediately review the play in queston.
The regulations will be similar to American football rules and will allow each team to dispute one call per half and during any overtime chukker. If the original call is overturned the team will not lose their appeal opportunity.
MORE TROUBLE
Problems continue for ERG patron Scott Wood, he only has half of his team confirmed (Agustin Merlos & Cristian Laprida) but their participation it’s still not confirmed at the 26 goals tournaments.
