True to his promise, Argentinean pro Miguel Diaz went on another scoring spree as he helped Tang Polo of China secure a final berth with another come-from-behind win in the Globalport Philippine Polo Open 2015 Thursday in Calatagan, Batangas.
A five-goaler, Diaz erupted for four goals, including the winning goal in the team’s thrilling 7-6 win over Polo Escape. Diaz’s winning goal which he produced in the last 32 seconds of the game capped the team’s stirring comeback from a 5-2 deficit.
Benjamin Urquiza accounted for the other three goals as Tang Polo completed a two-game sweep of Zone 1 elims.
“We’re lucky,” said team patron ShiLai Liu “Miguel played very well today. He promised he will score and he scored,”
They will play Los Tamaraos in the one-game finals tomorrow in Makati at 4 p.m. with an expected huge crowd.
“It’s going to be fast and furious final,” said local patron Mikee Romero, who organized the tournament for the third straight year.
Tang Polo’s win over Polo Escape also proved that its 8-7 win over Globalport last Wednesday was no fluke. In that win, Diaz also scored four goals.
Defending champion San Miguel trounced Kingpower of Thailand, 8-2, in the other game as Gregorio Gelosi and Guillermo Cavanagh each scored four goals.
San Miguel’s win created a three-way tie in Zone II after San Miguel, Los Tamaraos and Kingpower finished with similar 1-1 records.
But the Los Tamaraos, who pulled off a 9-5 win against San Miguel, took the top seeding due to their superior quotient.
Despite missing the finals Romero was elated with how the competition among the six teams turned out.
“This is a superb competition because it brought out the best in all the participating teams. This is a much higher competition being a 12-goal tournament and it’s a success,” said Romero.
