Sotogrande has definitely become one of the favourite destinations for polo players. The climate, the polo club, and the grounds have made Sotogrande one of the preferred countries on the international polo circuit. And the club has been working tirelessly to maintain that status.
The club is therefore undergoing several maintenance jobs (March-June) on the fields before the big tournaments begin: The Silver Cup and The Gold Cup, which will run from July 27 through to August 28. It is worth remembering that in 2015 Dubai, with Adolfo Cambiaso, claimed both titles.
The 2016 season in Sotogrande kicked off with the debut of the European Polo Tour, which consisted in 4-6 goal tournaments. This series of tournaments included Argentine asados on Sundays after the games, gala dinners for players, and several fun activities in Sotogrande and the surrounding area. The proximity of Sotogrande to Gibraltar and Málaga airport gives the club, on the shores of the Costa del Sol, a privileged location.
The European Polo Tour consisted of three stages, as well as the Memorial José Ignacio Domecq (low and medium goal), the Memorial Conde Guaqui and the International Day Tournament.
First-class fields:
Agricultural engineer Javier Gómez Barquero is responsible for the maintenance of the fields and gardens of Santa Maria Polo Club, and he has received a visit from Alejandro Battro, of Batrro Polo Fields, the most experience individual when it comes to polo fields. The Argentine supervised the ongoing work.
At the moment, the Los Pinos grounds are undergoing most of the work. The objective is not only to have them in perfect condition of the high-goal season, but to guarantee the safety of the horses and the players.
