From July 27 to August 28, Santa María Polo Club will host the 45th International Indi Polo Tournament in Sotogrande, southern Spain. The event will include low, medium and high-goal competitions.
There will be a Bronze Cup (for low-goal; this will also count as the Subsidiary for medium and high-goal), a Silver Cup and a Gold Cup.
The Cartier Gold Cup, a high-goal tournament, is one of the three Grand Slams of the World Polo Tour; the winning team receives 150 points. The Casa de Campo Silver Cup of the same category wins the champion 90 points and forms part of the WPT Championship Cup.
The best players in the world flock to Spain as Sotogrande and the International Indi Polo Tournament become the epicentre of the polo world. Players like Adolfo Cambiaso, Facundo Pieres, Nicolás Pieres, Juan Martín Nero, Pablo MacDonough, Pascual Sainz de Vicuña, to name a few, will take part in the high-goal, as well as the young stars of the English season, Julián de Lusarreta and Hugo Lewis. Bahar Jeffri and his team Brunei will also be present, boasting the talents of Pablo MacDonough. Bahar Jeffri and his team, then called Ahmibah, won Santa María’s three high-goal tournaments in 2008. The medium goal will see players such as Malcolm Borwick, Clemente Zavaleta, Ignacio Toccalino, Pierre-Henri N’Goumou, Pelayo Berazadi, and Guillermo Cuitiño, amoung others.
Nicolás Pieres, who will be playing with Iñigo Zobel’s Ayala, alongside his brother Facundo, spoke to PoloLine about his expectations formthe upcomins season: “After many years playing with Ellerston in Sotogrande, this is first season with Ayala”, he says. ” I am very happy, we have a great team and we’re very much looking forward to playing”.
“Also, it is the first time I play with a Spanish patron. It’s a lot of fun, and it’s really good to have Iñigo to invite both Facundo and me. He is a local in Sotogrande, he’s got a spectacular place, with lavish fields and stables as well as a large, fantastic organisation. We feel very comfortable with Ayala, to be a part of this team is a huge advantage. So I hope to have a good season”.
The Spanish season will be important in terms of the World Polo Tour, as Adolfo Cambiaso, current number one, will fight to defend his position from Facundo Pieres, recent winner of the English Gold Cup; Pieres only trails by 60 points.
Santa María Polo Club is the perfect place to enjoy the best polo in the world, and shopping, restaurants, bars, and fun activities for kids make Sotogrande an ideal place to spend time with family and friends. Everyone is welcome!
