Tarifa Beach Polo World Cup 2016
Hotel Maritime Club Sotogrande were crowned winners of the 3rd Tarifa Beach Polo World Cup 2016 held on the Playa de Los Lances in Tarifa, Spain, organised by Isabel de Borbón from 18 – 19 September. The winning team trumped Balm Lawyers, who took second place, Scapa, third place and Credit Suisse, in fourth place, to claim the trophy. Captain for the winning was Guillermo Steta, who is the current President of the Mexico Polo Federation. He had travelled to Tarifa expressly for this tournament, and to recognise this huge effort to participate in the tournament, Isabel de Borbón presented a medal of The Angel of Independence by appointment of the ambassador for the Mexico Polo Federation in Spain. The prize-giving table was well laden with goodies from glasswear to polo mallets all supplied by local sponsors.
Guests from the local social and public spheres, both from Tarifa and the Costa del Sol, included Countess Gunilla von Bismarck, Luis Ortiz, Princess Bea von Auersperg and her daughter Princess Cecile, the celebrated violinist Edmond Fokker van Crayestein, as well as the actress Raquel Meroño, who owns with her husband the beach bar Carbones 13, a fashionable new venue on the beaches of Tarifa, a collaborator of the tournament, and in front of which the sporting event took place.
