World-class event confirmed for Rocky this year

DRIVEN by the desire to “bring polo to the people”, this year will see Victoria Park in Rockhampton transform for a day of “champagne, glamour and fashion”.

Headricks Lane owners Peter Hawkins and Benito Zussino, together with Matthew Turich, have partnered with Urban Polo owner Janek Gazecki to bring this world-class event to Rockhampton on June 9.

Being the first of it’s kind this far north, Pop-Up Polo will bring players and horses from around Queensland and Victoria to showcase one of the fastest growing spectator sports in the world.

This “entirely unique experience” is set to excite Rocky audiences with Janek saying they will be “utterly thrilled by the athleticism, the skill, the daring and the courage of professional polo players.”.

“You’re going to watch a bunch of blokes travelling at 60 kmh, engaged in a full contact sport, on horseback in what is the second-most dangerous team sport after Formula 1 racing,” he said.

“It’s very different to the races.

“It’s a celebration of good food, good company and style.”

With many other events taking place during the day, polo won’t be the only spectacle on show for the crowd.

Janek said the age of tradition of the “divot stomp” will take place and their latest polo addition, “the dash” would be a great way to get the crowd involved.

“Fashion is a huge aspect of the day. It’s not like racing fashion,” he said.

Providing hot-tips on fashion across the months leading up to the day, Janek was positive about this event becoming an annual occurrence.

“There is a great team here in Rockhampton assisting us,” he said.

“I get a very positive feel about this place.

“The venue itself is really quite incredible.”

Rockhampton Regional Council will be donating the use of the venue alongside in-kind sponsorship, with General Manager of Community Services Colleen Worthy saying council was very excited for the event.

“We are excited about the benefits it will bring to the city,” Colleen said.

Rockhampton Jaguar Land Rover have also been confirmed as one of the day’s major sponsors.

General Manager Simon Weigh said the partnership was a natural fit.

“Jaguar Land Rover Australia sponsor the Polo in the City circuit, so each year it grows in the major cities,” he said.

“So it’s great to see an event like this held regionally.”

Selling out over a year in advance in their city locations, this boutique event will be the hottest ticket in town.
