Pop-up polo returns to Rockhampton on June 9

VICTORIA Park on Rockhampton’s western fringes might chuck geography out the window to become the new centre of town on June 8.

More than 2000 people are expected to catch the action in the latest pop-up polo tournament.

Run under the auspices of the Urban Polo Association, the boutique event has established itself on Rockhampton’s social calendar.

A year ago chief organiser Janek Gazecki said he reacted to “countless requests” to stage a local polo match after similar activities took flight in Brisbane, Beaudesert and the Gold Coast.

The 2018 rendition was a success and there is a growing optimism this renewal will be as popular.

There are assorted tickleting deals ranging in price and service including The Canadian Club Polo Lounge where players and patrons can share a casual beer garden setting.

A spokesman said the event promised something different from the usual entertainment fare.

“The sport of royalty comes to Rockhampton in June,” the spokesman said.

“The world’s largest and most successful polo series brings with it award winning entertainment, glamour, excitement, premium food, champagne and the thrill of the world’s fastest ball game, presented in the guise of Urban Polo.

“Pop Up Polo is an experience that is difficult to forget or surpass.”

For the uninitiated polo is played on a rectangular field and consists of four chukkas (plays), each one lasting seven minutes of actual play. The game starts when the umpire throws the ball in between the two competing teams, comprising four riders on each side.

It has often been labelled the Sport of Kings.

The event gets under way at 11.30am.
