Record breaking number of teams compete
From Thursday 7 – Sunday 10 February, over 650 students from across the British Isles in over 190 teams descended on Rugby Polo Club for the annual SUPA Winter University Nationals. Throughout four days of action, in weather from all four seasons, teams across the 25 leagues competed for their coveted trophies. The University of Warwick came out of overall winners, securing four league titles: Beginner 3a, Beginner B2, Novice 2b and Novice 3a, but with so many students taking part the real winner was SUPA, who has seen a remarkable increase in entries over the past year.
The Polo Times Best Playing Pony rug was secured by the exceedingly cute, and all-round excellent school pony Pooh Bear, owned by Conroy Polo, whilst The Polo Magazine Most Valuable Player award was presented to Francis Douglas-Lamb, an Upper Intermediate player from Nottingham University, whilst Alex Bartlam, a Birmingham University Beginner 3 player was presented with The Most Improved Player award. Furthermore, the APSPH Best Playing Hired Pony rug went to Clover owned by Glynn Henderson.
A full report will follow in the next issue of Polo Times, so be sure to update your subscription here so as not to miss out. The SUPA Summer University Nationals are set to take place at Offchurch Polo Club during the summer months.
