Samurai win Horseman Cup Polo Championships

Samurai are the Horseman Cup Polo champions.

The handicap 3 Samurai team of Jammie Murray (4.5), Megan Griffiths (0.5) and Phyllipa Gulden (0) overcame Gypsy 5-4.5 in a mouthwatering match at Nairobi Polo Club on Sunday.

Starting the match with half a fraction of a goal, the handicap 2.5 Gipsy team of Callum Shaw (2.5), Nicky Ngugi (0.5), Amani Nzomo (0) and Jammie Excel (-0.5) could not match the fighting spirit of marauding Samurai whose maximan Jammie (Murray) was the fulcrum of the team.

Jammie put through the ball three times in the first chukka and was on the mark again in the second and third chukkas with two more superb goals that carried the day and put the match beyond any doubt for the winners.

Amani (Nzomo) who is making a return to the league after an excellent performance in the Maria Bencivenga Championships at the same venue in January scored a double in the final chukka after Shaw had another double in the third chukka to finish the match with their shoulders high.

The winners received their prizes from British Deputy Commissioner Josephine Gauld.

Prior to the final match, Samurai had defeated MICT 8-5.5 to stamp their authority in the three-day tournament that saw them win all their preliminary matches on the way to the finals.

White Cap team of Tarquin Gross (3), Will Millar (1), Louis Roumeguere (0.5) and Eva Kamau (-1.5) won the Plate Championships.

White Cap demolished Governors Camp 7-4 to emerge the winners of the play-offs.

It was a sad day for the Governors Camp team of Izzy Parsons (2.5), Pete Griffiths (1), Magda Jurkowiecka (-1.5) and Nick Millar (1) from a mixed start in their opening match when they lost 7-5 against Samurai before overcoming Ultimate 8-6 in their penultimate match before their defeat on Sunday.

Against Governors camp, the White Cap team scored their goals through Tarquin Gross who scored six of the seven goals while Millar (Will) managed the other.

On their part, Izzy Parsons scored a double while Nick Millar and Pete Griffiths each scored for their side.
