The founder and owner of La Bourgogne Club de Polo is raising the bar, with improvements to facilities, an increased emphasis on marketing and big plans for the future
The spring season of competition began April 19 and will continue through June 1.
Games are held on Fridays and Saturdays, weather permitting.
The fall season is scheduled to begin Sept. 14 and continue through Nov. 11.
The $50,000 AFM Give Me Wings 20-goal tournament will take place at the beginning of the fall season.
The series of matches will benefit the AFM Give Me Wings Foundation, which Meunier established to honor the memory of his son, Anthony Francois Meunier.
The younger Meunier died two years ago at the age of 22 in single-vehicle crash.
There was a $30,000 AFM Give Me Wings 20-goal game during La Bourgogne’s fall season in 2023.
“We want to be known as the home of Aiken high-goal polo,” David Meunier said. “Our goal is to provide a great show for the spectators. We want them to mingle and enjoy.”
There are 30 new VIP cabanas on the side of the main playing field opposite the three-story pavilion, which is named for Anthony Meunier.
The number of VIP boxes on the pavilion side has been increased from 65 to 67.
Bathroom facilities have been upgraded, and La Bourgogne has a new portable trophy presentation stand.
“We have an announcer booth for our lower field,” David Meunier said.
Ron Trytek is La Bourgogne’s new director of sales and marketing. He previously held a similar position at the Sarasota Polo Club in Florida,
“We’re focusing on the hospitality aspect, taking care of the spectators and taking care of the teams,” he said.
Eventually, Meunier wants to be able to pay teams to come to La Bourgogne and play.
“If you’re a team, you have to pay an entry fee,” he said. “I want to be able to write them a check [instead].”
La Bourgogne is at 1150 Coleman Bridge Road between Aiken and Wagener. The entrance for spectators is at the corner of Flowing Well Road and Upper Pond Road.
